Situated on the corner of Mandeville Place and Bentinck Street in London’s affable Marylebone lies The Reform Social and Grill.
Otherwise known as luxury hotel the Mandeville’s bar and brasserie, this place has an informal feel to it without compromising on class.
The colour scheme at Reform Social and Grill is dark wood with intimate, red leather clad booths that sit alongside more elegant two, four and six seater British gentlemen’s-club style dining tables, allowing you to choose your preferred ambience dependent on who you are visiting with.
The menu is simple but offers everything you’d expect from a brasserie of the sort.
Steaks and salads are a staple feature and there is a prominent nod to our own British culture with various Cornish inclusions here and there and other notable ingredients from our fair isles.
The overall cuisine theme would indicate something French, evident alone from the snails garnish that you can order to accompany any steak.
When I visited I had a mackerel with squid and sea vegetable starter, and my dining companion a Cornish crab tart.
Our mains were more robust – lamb cutlets and scallop topped fish pie, and puddings returned us to our home-grown anglais environment: summer pudding and bakewell tart (the vanilla blamanche, in a hark back to English childhood, was sadly off the menu).
Clientèle on the night included a family of red-wine sipping Italians, a lone cocktail-menu perusing savvy business traveller, and a group of other chino-clad gentlemen. The Reform Social and Grill also appears to have a strong following of local clients who make use of it for lunchtime meetings and post-work entertaining.
The interesting choice of art on the walls (a huge light blue polystyrene sculpture and a beautiful wooden clock whose face is rather an old school map) make the interior cool and contemporary which is in line with who it aims to attract.
A great spot for people watching, and even if you’re not dining, an enjoyable central venue from which to sample the wine and cocktail list.
