North Audley Cantine (NAC), launched late last year by a trio of Frenchmen, is a stylish addition to Mayfair’s restaurant offerings.
Located on its namesake street, this relaxed and contemporary bistro offers mainly French sharing plates that also draw inspiration from other cuisines.
Upon arrival, after walking past the restaurant once due to the small sign, we were greeted warmly by a gaggle of smiling waitresses.
We couldn’t help but notice that the restaurant was fairly empty for a Friday night, although as the evening progressed the tables gradually filled up, emitting a nice buzzy atmosphere.
Once seated, we perused the creative cocktail menu, settling on the Lady Grey and the Flying Dutchbag. The Lady Grey being my favourite of the two, involving Earl Grey-infused gin, hints of vanilla and peach, fresh lime and Champagne, topped with an edible violet.
The restaurant interior is both charming and chic; combining whitewashed exposed brick walls, large circular mirrors, beige leather seating and white marble tables. The soft lighting and unobtrusive (yet excellent) music make for a warm and comfortable ambience.
We shared four of the Franco-tapas style dishes, taking on board the eager recommendations from our waitress and opting for a mixture of meat and seafood plates.
My highlight was the Saint-Jacques seared scallops, accompanied by roasted butternut squash, both of which were lightly caramelised – delicious.
Our other dishes included spicy lamb chops and hummus, tender pork belly with spinach and onion crisps and foie gras with red wine, figs and brioche. The plates are relatively small so if you’re hungry I would recommend a minimum of 2-3 dishes per person.
For dessert we indulged in the churros with popping sugar, dulcey ice cream and chocolate sauce, a popular choice it seemed, and the salted caramel profiteroles, which were also accompanied by ice cream.
North Audley Cantine is well suited to all sorts of occasions, be it a large dinner with friends, a romantic date or just a quick bite to eat during the week.
The restaurant itself is airy and sophisticated with many light, attractive dishes on offer. Prices are mid-range to high, although by Mayfair standards it is very reasonable.
Don’t miss out on the cool basement cocktail bar, which has a clubby lounge feel and a wealth of comfortable seating – a great place to make your way through the list of innovative cocktail concoctions.
