New York does boutique hotels better than most – the city abounds with a mix of stylish, modern and cool boutique hotels, with SoHo being a hotspot.
Adding a more luxurious and elegant alternative is the Crosby Street Hotel from London-based Firmdale Hotels.
Bold colours and fabrics dominate with striking objets d’art in the lobby proving a contrast to the cobbled street of Soho outside.
Rooms continue with the Firmdale style of stylish, elegant and homely, with softer, more subtle colours, with the odd design quirk thrown in to mix things up.
While I very much like designer (and owner) Kit Kemp’s signature style, the downside to someone so used to their London hotels is that the style is so recognisable that there’s no obvious link to New York or Soho at the Crosby Street Hotel.
Until you enter the bedroom that is: high ceilings and huge metal framed windows with views of loft-style apartments and offices is every inch the New York SoHo experience.
Bedrooms are large for New York, with even the smallest of the 86 bedrooms and suites spread over 11 floors being a spacious 32 square metres.
Bedrooms feature flat screen LCD TVs, iPod docking stations, free WiFi and custom-made Miller Harris bath products, while the hotel also has a gym and another Firmdale signature, a 99 seater screening room.
As is often the case with hotels, the luxury is in the detail – space to store luggage out of sight, powerful showers, large, comfortable beds and plug sockets next to your bed for charging your appliances within reach all equate to a wonderful hotel experience.
The Crosby Bar with its long pewter counter (similar to London’s Soho Hotel bar) stretches a whole block from Crosby Street to Lafayette Street, opening on to a patio area for outdoor dining and drinking.
In keeping with Crosby Street Hotel’s green credentials, there is an urban vegetable patch and chicken coop on the roof that supplies the hotel with seasonal produce.
Crosby Street Hotel offers a tranquil, refined experience just a few yards from the busiest streets of one of the most vibrant cities in the world – sometimes you really can have it all.
